The Murray River is one of the many rivers, (15 to be exact), that makes up Murray-Darling River basin in eastern Australia. It is a beautiful river that is teeming with an ecosystem that has been evolving for millions of years. Out of 15 rivers, Murray is the second longest at 2530 kilometers. This river is a major source of income for the Australian economy. Agriculture and power generation are a big part of this river. However, there is a third industry connected with this river and it is tourism. Many people own their own “shacks” or holiday homes along the edge of the river. These holiday homes are available for renting.

The most popular water activities on this river are boating, water skiing and canoeing. Boating also includes renting house boats. River boat cruises are also a very popular activity. Whatever your liking is as far as water related activities go, one thing for sure is that the Murray River has something to offer you. The river is dotted with small towns where vacationers can stop and enjoy what the river has to offer. One such place that is growing in popularity is Robinvale Euston. This town is located about 500 kilometers from Melbourne, and it used to be a major wheat producing area.

Nowadays, along with agriculture, it has grown to become a popular vacation spot for people who would like to get close to nature, and do something different other than beaches. This town is accessible by road as well as rail. Major bus companies make daily trips to Robinvale Euston from Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

Australia has vibrant tourism industry. Australia offers both, nature and monument related tourism. In fact Australia also offers tourists the chance to partake in Eco-tourism. As far as monuments go, the 2 that get the most visitors is the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. As far as nature and beach related tourism goes, the list is endless. Ayers Rock (presently known as Uluru) located in central Australia attracts many visitors. Getting there is easy with daily flights from most major cities. Other cities worth visiting include Melbourne and Perth.

However, if you are looking for a unique vacation deep in nature, then taking a trip to Tasmania is well worth it. It is an island situated south of Australia and abounds with streams, lakes, world heritage jungles and unusual wildlife. The next place that makes it to our list is the capital city Canberra. It is located between Melbourne and Sydney and is well connected with modern highways. Canberra has modern art galleries, museums and contemporary architecture. The town is also dotted with many lakes, giving it a postcard worthy look to it. Getting around Australia is not difficult. All the big cities and small towns are connected by road, rail and air. In some of the smaller, out of the way towns, aircraft are available for charter.

    When it comes to the flora and fauna, Australia is a continent like no other. It has nearly a million native species, and out of these most of them is native to this continent! This includes flowering and fruiting plants, mammals, reptiles and many of the fish and birds that live in and around the continent. As far as the flora goes Australia also has one of the oldest living species of trees. The Wollemi pine has been around since the dinosaurs, nearly sixty million years ago! Other examples include the living fossil also known as cycad palm and grass tree. Another unique to Australia native tree, is the acacia of which there are nearly a 1000 different species. Other trees include the bottle tree and eucalyptus.

    The same goes for the Fauna found in Australia. There are nearly 400 species of mammals, over 800 species of birds, nearly 300 species of lizards and 140 species of reptiles, including crocodiles. However, the most famous animal’s native to Australia are of course the kangaroo, wallaby, duck billed platypus and the Tasmanian devil. The monotreme is a relatively unknown mammal. It is unique because it is one of the few egg laying mammals. Nearly half of the bird species in Australia are unique to this place. With all these numbers going for it, it is not surprising that Australia has ten percent of the world’s bio-diversity.
